Girl I was dating ended things after saying she felt pressured — did I handle this wrong?
I met a girl off of Hinge and we were dating for about a little over a month. Things seemed to be going okay, but eventually she stopped reciprocating equally — she never initiated much contact, often talked more about her own issues than about “us,” and she also flaked on a couple of dates along the way. I called her out on it the 2nd time she did this. And it was getting more and more complicated to get dates scheduled, which she only lives 15 minutes away.
She lost her job in the middle of on tenure dating, so I gave her the benefit of the doubt she was dealing with the stress of that. Under normal circumstances, I would've cut her off when noticing these signs.
Last Thursday, we had a phone call where I asked her how she felt about things with us, and kinda mentioned the patterns she was giving me. I also did say that EVENTUALLY, I would like to explore going exclusive. This was my therapist's idea btw. I brought up this topic not because I necessarily wanted to go exclusive right then and there, but wanted to see where her head was with me. So if weren't on the same page, I could adjust my level of interest in her, or move on entirely. She said she understood she had been distant and cold, but she had a lot of stuff going on(lost of her job) but liked spending time together but didn't want a relationship. I understood and said I was on the same page. The next day (Friday), we still went on a date. During the date, I noticed she avoided more personal questions and steered the conversation back to drama and surface-level stuff. I kissed her at the end, but she didn’t seem as into it as before.
Over the weekend, she didn’t really reach out. Then on Monday, she told me it was over. She said I’m a great guy but she wasn’t ready for an exclusive relationship, and that that the discussion had made her feel pressured. And didn't want to continue something where we both weren't on the same page. Thus she decided to end things.
Now I’m left wondering:
- Why would she still go on the date if she felt this way?
- Or did the date itself confirm her feelings?
- Was I too forward/clingy by asking about exclusivity, or was this more about her not being ready for a relationship at all?
I feel like I gave consistent effort and attention, but in the end, she decided it wasn’t right for her. But now I know I should probably just match the energy that I receive.
Feel free to give me the real. Thanks in advance!
