Do Americans not say bye when they hang up the phone?

Your movies and TV shows for as long as I remember would have people just hang up once it’s assumed the conversation is over, but you never hear the other person’s reaction. The higher the stakes the more this happens. No time to say bye, gotta hang up right now and do that thing we just talked about.
