The Veylara Oath Part 4
The journey to Veylara began in silence. The Sa’cean fleet slid through the void, their hulls still scarred from running battles with the splinter swarm. The Freeborn were quartered aboard the cruiser Tash’var’s Resolve, its corridors humming with alien energy and the clipped footfalls of Fire Warriors.
In the barracks, the mood was taut. Some of the newer defectors sharpened blades obsessively, while others stared at the deck in grim silence. Veterans muttered low prayers—not to the Emperor, but to the memory of brothers left behind. The air was thick with the knowledge that this would not be another escort, another easy rescue. This was a war that could bleed even the angels of death.
Jorvai walked the rows, inspecting armor with a commander’s eye. He spoke little, his presence enough to steady nerves. When a defector fumbled his boltgun reassembly, Jorvai knelt, corrected the error, and handed it back with a firm nod. No rebuke, no sermon. Just quiet assurance.
Kaelor, meanwhile, spent his hours staring through the viewing ports. Veylara grew larger with each passing cycle, its oceans gleaming blue, its forests a deep green. From orbit it seemed untouched, a jewel suspended in the void. Only the faint trails of smoke breaking from the northern hemisphere betrayed the truth—that death already stalked its surface.
The Tau prepared with their own precision. Fire Caste cadres drilled in the hangars, their pulse rifles clattering in rhythm. Earth Caste engineers checked and re-checked transports, their voices sharp with urgency. Even the Water Caste moved with uncommon haste, organizing evacuation manifests and dispatching messages across the fleet.
And always, the shadow of the hive fleet lingered beyond the system’s rim. Spore tendrils and feeder vessels drifted closer each cycle, a black tide waiting to crash against the planet’s surface.
On the eve of arrival, the Freeborn gathered in the cruiser’s launch bay. Rows of Astartes stood beneath the looming bulk of drop craft and jury-rigged Tau transports, their armor scarred but gleaming, their weapons checked and rechecked. Around them, Fire Warriors and Earth Caste crew moved with quiet awe, giving the giants their space.
Kaelor stepped forward. For a long moment, he said nothing, letting the silence stretch until every brother’s eyes were fixed on him.
“When we left the Imperium,” he began, his voice carrying across the steel deck, “we left behind more than chains. We left behind certainty. No one writes songs for us. No one marks our banners in gold. We are thirty-three men the galaxy believes dead—or worse.”
He paused, scanning the faces before him. Some were scarred veterans, others fresh defectors, but all stood as one.
“And yet, here we are. Called not to slaughter for a tyrant’s throne, but to defend those who cannot defend themselves. Families. Farmers. Children. They are why we took this path. If we cannot stand for them, then all we are is dust and broken oaths.”
Jorvai folded his arms, watching with the faintest glimmer of pride as Kaelor’s words struck home.
Kaelor’s voice rose, hard as iron. “The Imperium told us brotherhood ends at the gene-seed. That we fight only for our kind. But I say brotherhood is wider. It is the Tau who fight at our side. It is the civilians who look to us with hope. It is each of you, standing here with nothing left to lose but everything to give.”
He let the words hang, then drove the point home. “Tomorrow, Veylara will remember who came. They will remember the Freeborn. And if the swarm falls, it will be because we stood where no one else could.”
A low rumble rolled through the gathered Astartes, not a cheer but the sound of gauntlets striking breastplates, of armored fists pounding steel in grim affirmation.
Above them, the bay’s great viewing shield opened. The planet filled their sight now, vast and green, but scarred by the black trails of war. Fires burned faintly in the northern plains, the Tyranid swarm spreading like ink across the surface.
Kaelor’s final words cut through the silence. “Brothers—this is where the Freeborn are forged.”
The fleet dropped from warp, engines flaring. The Sa’cean cruisers wheeled into attack formation, rail cannons charging. Drop craft engines screamed to life, ready to plunge through the clouds.
And from orbit, the Freeborn watched as Veylara rose to meet them—its fate balanced on the edge of their blades.
