Refeeding Syndrome & weight gain advice.
Hoping this group can help me out.
I don’t currently have an ED. Long story short, I was extremely overweight lbs in 2013 and an extreme binge eater. I qualified for weight loss surgery and opted for the lapband, which has helped restrict my food intake over the years. Fast forward to this year, I’m pregnant - in my third trimester. Baby is pushing on the band essentially blocking all food/water causing me to vomit everything and keep nothing down beginning about two weeks ago. Unbeknownst to me my potassium, phosphorous, electrolyte levels drop so low that I could have died (discovered this after reluctantly going to the ER thinking I just needed an IV for extra hydration). I went into kidney failure and my heart was days away from stopping.
I was rushed to the ICU, pumped with 20 bags of potassium in about 48 hours, and had a bariatric surgeon release all of the fluid from my lapband basically removing all restriction.
I immediately started eating and drinking and was released from the hospital a day later when my potassium levels normalized.
In the three days following discharge, I gained 45 pounds in “water retention” in three days. It’s been a week and a half since then and in that time I was readmitted to the hospital where they gave me diuretics for two days to try and release the fluids, but no luck. Since then (8/27) my weight hasn’t gone down and I’m suffering from insane edema in my stomach, legs, and feet.
So it seems all signs are similar to that of anorexia ED recovery and refeeding even though the lack of food was for such short period of time (unsure if amount of time even matters).
All that being said, I’m working on therapy at home to try and reduce the edema and swelling…
But realistically, how long can I expect to go through this until my body is done healing, functioning normally, and the swelling is gone?
Thanks in advance!
