How do i use leafedit?

Earlier today tried out leaf editor on my 3ds. My game is on the latest update and I made a save backup on checkpoint, and used that save for the editor(my game is digitally download). I made some changes to my character and replaced some villagers. No matter how many time I save the changes the game still stays unchanged. am i missing something?
