Why isn't there standard naming for barrel plugs?

For example :

Type 1: Inner diameter 2.5mm / Outer Diameter 5mm - positive inside

Type 2: Inner diameter 2mm / Outer Diameter 4mm - positive outside

Etc etc.

Having proprietary barrel connectors with difficult to source replacements is just asking for e-waste.

Even if you own decent callipers for measuring, there's still the issue with whether positive is outside or in and which could destroy an appliance if it's the wrong way round.
