Gotchas are 100 percent valid.

A lot of people think gotchas during debates, arguments, or everyday conversations are childish. Because gotchas focus on scoring points instead of real discussion. Because they feel petty, making the debate seem like a game instead of problem-solving.

But in reality, gotchas can expose contradictions that someone tries to hide. They force people to clarify or defend shaky claims. They stop bad-faith arguments from sliding by unnoticed. They hold people accountable to their own words and logic. They push debates toward honesty instead of empty rhetoric.

For example, If someone says “I support free speech” but then argues to censor opinions they dislike, a gotcha would call out that hypocrisy.
