So is it Ed who's held up Radiohead reconvening?
I love Ed. I love his guitar sounds. I love the humility and warmth he exudes in every interview. I really enjoyed "Earth" and am excited for EOB LP2.
That said, he seems to work really slowly. He talked about planning to work on an electronic project in Brazil in 2012, which shifted to a more guitar-based project after he was inspired by Primal Scream. He then spent time in Wales, hiking with his guitar and reading "Leaves of Grass" and getting inspired. Eventually, he put out "Earth" in 2020. I think it's probably insecurity that holds Ed back, and I think a lot of us can relate to that. Again, these are some of the reasons I feel so warmly about Ed.
He's also stayed mostly positive in interviews about Radiohead's prospects about reconvening when the time is right. But he seems to have placed more qualifications on the potential reunion than other band members, saying things like (I'm paraphrasing) it might not happen, it might only be 3 or 4 members, it won't happen till the "truth" is there. If I have some time, I'll track down these interviews and link them to source.
Of course, Thom and Jonny have as prolific as ever since the Covid lockdown, with The Smile, film scores, and other side projects.
Phil, of course, had an album in 2023, but has said Radiohead is still a band. Colin has been busy with Nick Cave, but from my recollection, also sounds upbeat about Radiohead in interviews.
Most recently, Ed, in an Instagram post, expressed support for controversial hip hop group Kneecap. Kneecap sparked controversy most notably for raising the Hamas and Hezbollah flags during a performance. I respect the hell out of Ed for expressing his support for Palestine. But Jonny's wife is Israeli, and Jonny previously dipped his toe into the Kneecap controversy, stating “We have no judgment to pass on Kneecap but note how sad it is that those supporting their freedom of expression are the same ones most determined to restrict ours.” Source: https://www.theguardian.com/music/2025/may/06/jonny-greenwood-and-israeli-musician-dudu-tassa-condemn-silencing-after-uk-concerts-pulled
So anyway. Ed and the rest of the boys don't owe us anything. I'm just curious what y'all think about Ed and his role in the structure of Radiohead these days. Has he held things up as much as I think, or am I off base?
