Oil loss, metal shavings on dipstick
I changed my oil on my 22 Tacoma today and didn’t read the back of the filter box with the giant warning on gasket placement. First time doing it on this vehicle and it just never occurred to me.
Anyways I’m going down the road and get a low oil warning. Immediately pull over and see that my undercarriage is covered in oil. After removing the skid plate it was clear the filter gasket was installed wrong. Thankfully I bought the supplies for two oil changes so I was able to install new gaskets and refill about 5 qts to read in the middle of the dipstick.
I see what look like metal shavings on the dipstick. Am I totally fucked? I didn’t see any metal in the oil I drained from the filter. It seems like the dipstick is scratching the tube on the way down, is that just wishful thinking?
Is this a “whatever’s done is done” situation? Change the oil and the filter again? Tow it to a shop and have them do something special? Appreciate any advice, I’m freaking out :(
