Wow so it seems I’m not the only one who’s had a bad time at B&N.
So from what I’m reading here, I’m not the only one who’s had a shitty time at Barnes & Noble’s. Barnes & Noble’s was my favorite store for years. I read a lot of a kid didn’t have a lot of friends so I would go there almost every week. And I had applied when I graduated from high school and I just never got it until 2024. Because they needed Christmas workers and my dad’s cousin just happened to be the manager at a different location a little bit farther from where I live, but still drivable. So she practically gave me a job and I started out now when I first started everything seems pretty good. I took a little bit to learn how to do stuff, but I got it eventually like why do the managers at least in my experience or whatever she was, don’t explain things to you.
The whatever position she was, would target me to do very specific things stack books find books for BOPIN (Bought on line pick up in store) find things for ROPIN, recovery, helping customers and things like that. I excelled at helping customers apparently I was the only one who knew Spanish in a predominantly Spanish speaking area of the United States and my managers always got mad at me because I was always doing something wrong instead of explaining it to me they’d say no you’re wrong. Go do something else and then when I asked one manager to explain how you were supposed to be doing a certain display(Moomon) like apparently I put the toys wrong apparently, and I asked her to explain it to me because I didn’t understand what she wanted me to do. She cried and reported me to the manager. Apparently, I was “rude” and I “yelled” at her in a very full store of people who could’ve vouched that I did not yell at her. I thought I was doing really well on the things that I was good at, but apparently I didn’t learn fast enough. I was chastised for not learning quick enough. I was told I needed to get better or else I wasn’t gonna last very long there. By one of the employees cause they had a little click going on there’s three of them. It was a manager and then two of the other ones that were always working. I thought that they didn’t have full-time positions, but apparently they do. I don’t know. Did anyone else experience condescension and just downright elitism? And I read a lot while I was there. A lot of people would ask some of the other employees about certain books, and I would be the one having to jump in and talk about it because apparently those other people didn’t read those books and I asked one of them and he was like oh no, I don’t really read . He had been there for three years. What do you mean that you work at Barnes & Noble and you don’t really read? I don’t know a lot of of the people there are were just mean and rude and had no business working in a bookstore. I don’t know. Did anyone else have this sort of experience while being there?
