My friend’s friend left me crying alone on the street at 3AM. What would you do?
TL;DR: After my friend Leah got seriously injured on a night out, I did everything I could to help her only to be pushed aside, dismissed, and left alone by her other best friend, Hannah, who I had just met.
I (22f) have been reconnecting with an old close friend, “Leah” (22f). We drifted apart slightly over the past couple years, and her best friend “Hannah” (21f) kind of became her new #1. No hard feelings about this; I’ve been working on being more present and rebuilding that connection.
Last night I went out with Leah’s friend group and met Hannah for the first time. Toward the end of the night it was just us 3 left at the bar. Leah cut her hand badly on glass was bleeding heavily so I helped get her out of the crowd, found staff, and they started treating the wound. Hannah didn’t follow us, and I was worried about her being alone while drunk, so I called her from Leah’s phone to let her know what was going on and make sure she was okay, but she was dismissive.
When we reunited outside, Hannah seemed confused and didn’t understand how serious the injury was. She scolded me for trying to take Leah to the hospital, said Leah didn’t need it, and then ripped off the gauze the staff had just applied to see for herself. She changed her mind and told staff she’d walk Leah to the hospital herself.
I ran after them and offered to come too. I was calm, more sober, and genuinely trying to help. But Hannah kept shutting me out, whispered things to Leah obviously talking about me, and then told me to go home. Leah looked at me with an apologetic expression as Hannah dragged her away. Leah was pretty drunk and in a difficult position, literally being dragged away by Hannah.
I ended up alone on the street at 3AM, crying. Afraid, I ran back to the bar where staff thankfully let me wait back inside and even called Hannah to confirm Leah was actually going to the hospital.
Earlier in the night before Hannah was being rude to me, she kept putting Leah in weird positions, like asking her hypotheticals e.g. who she’d save from a burning building: her or Leah’s boyfriend. Who’s really “#1.” It seemed playful on the surface, but it stuck with me especially after what happened later in the night.
I wasn’t trying to step on anyone’s toes and I am not interested in fighting to be Leah’s number 1. I just wanted to help a good friend who was hurt. I don’t know if I should bring any of this up to Leah or just let it go. I don’t want to stir drama, but I also left that night feeling pretty small.
Would appreciate an outside perspective
