Refining my chair flying
Hello r slash flying!
I am a freshly minted PPL now looking down the barrel of commercial time building. I want to make the most of the next ~150 hours or so before flight test prep begins, and to that end I’m looking for some advice.
None of my instructors ever really explained the details of chair flying to me. When I sat down to do chair flying to study for my PPL, my approach was just to close my eyes and visualize the aircraft and move my hands as if manipulating the controls and panels. I mainly used this to practice emergency procedures and cockpit management. This worked adequately well, I passed my checkride on my first go with solid marks.
That being said, there were weaknesses in my performance landings and some airwork maneuvers (steep turns and slow flight) that I debriefed with the examiner that were satisfactory for PPL but will need to be tightened up to meet CPL standards. I want to get better at chair flying and if possible use it to help refine these skills when I’m not in the airplane.
I hoping to figure out what the best process is when practicing at home and how to use visual aids like cockpit panel printouts to help. What do you do to get the most out of your chair flying and how do you use it to be as prepared as you can when practicing in the aircraft.
