Is shingles contagious to everyone?
My 85 grandmother currently has shingles for the first time.
For whatever reason she never received the Shingrix vaccine. It was pretty nasty and it was in her eye. We made her get to the doctor even though she didn’t want to. Her eye swelled up to the size of probably 2 ping pong balls and she could not see out of it. The swelling is now completely gone since the medications are doing their job. She just still has the nasty rash down her face and scalp.
I understand that shingles is contagious to those who have not had chickenpox, unvaccinated, and possibly those who are vaccinated for it depending on their immunity titres. I have had chickenpox when I was less than a year old, so im not vaccinated. I’ve had immunity titres checked for my schooling and I have proven immunity to chickenpox/varicella.
I have been taking care of my grandmother on and off this week. I haven’t hugged her or touched her, just going in to check on her and cook for her etc. I had to call in sick to work one day to do this. I told them my grandmother is dealing with shingles. My work did not want to let me come in until her rash has scabbed over, despite not touching her, washing my hands etc. I do work in healthcare.
My work was telling me if I feel unwell to stay home longer. From my understanding I already have the shingles virus, it’s just not activated. But they are acting like im ground zero for spreading shingles somehow?
