What causes rumi's patterns to increase?

We see at the end of the movie she kind of started turning more demon because of her fear and shame and things like that, But throughout the movie, the very beginning she didn't really have any patterns and then they seem to just be spreading throughout the movie or as she aged. What exactly caused that?
