Thinking of rehoming my cat

Behavioral

I feel so terrible and guilty about thinking of rehoming my cat, it’s the last thing I want to do, but I’m at my wits end. I adopted my cat, Tony, back in May of this year. He is 1 y/o and a sweet cat, I love him so so much. Half my camera roll is pictures of him, he is the cuddliest kitty I know, and the cutest little munchkin. The thought of rehoming him has brought me to sobs every time I’ve thought about it. However, he has been on and off peeing in my bed whenever I am gone or asleep. (It’s not medical, I’ve been to the vet). I dealed with it and tried to deter him. I went back to college classes a couple of weeks ago and now it has picked up expeditiously. I’m certain it is the stress of being gone, I’m gone from around 10:40-6:30 nearly every day besides the weekends.

I am still giving him ample love and attention before and after I go to class. He gets lots of playtime in the morning and evening, cuddles, feeding, clean litter box, treats in his puzzle toy, I do everything I can. He still just pees in my bed. He meows, constantly, when I’m home. I can play with him for 45 minutes and when I need to get back to work or other things, he will walk away and start crying out in a separate room. Every. Single. Moment. I do not get any peace in the mornings or evenings, I wake up stressed at his meows at go to bed stressed at his meows. I come home and my bed stinks of piss and I have to wash my sheets for the 3rd day in a row. It’s building so much resentment and stress in me and I am at a loss of what to do. I’ve had my period for the last week (sorry TMI) because it’s causing me so much stress. I am losing sleep, breaking out, hair falling out, etc. I have tried absolutey everything to try and reduce his anxiety and attachment to me, create enrichment in my apartment, give him love when I’m home, but I can’t pay attention to him literally all the time.

Equally, the last thing I want is to let him go and find him a new home, but I cant live like this, I need relaxation and “me time” at some point during my day. This is all making me think that my home is not fit for his needs, even though I have tried literally everything to help him out. The last thing I can think of is anti-anxiety medications and I’m taking him to the vet today to discuss it.

I just feel so riddled with guilt but equally I can’t live like this. And again he is a living creature that I made the decision to take care of for life. I’ve been snapping at friends and my boyfriend and falling behind in class because he calls for so much attention. I have no idea what to do, if anyone has words of wisdom, please let me know.
