Peter Sherman, b. 1788 NY
So lost in a Sherman family not really chronicled. I seem to be missing his father's name, but can theorize his grandfather, aunts/uncles and even his brother. Here's what I have
Elisha Sherman found in (Westchester, NY records-married to Phoebe (Canfield) of Conn. (Ferris-Canfield line) Found their children's (8) birth records, from 1750-1760's. Theorized to be his grandfather. Due to repetition of names.
I focused on Solomon Sherman, as his 1790 census showed him with 2 sons under 5.
His older brother, also named Peter Sherman fought a n the Rev. War and received a land bounty in the Ovid-Seneca NY area. Married Martha Hait (Hoyt/HAYT) presumably of Conn. (no children-his will gave some to nieces/nephews-one is presumed to be our ancestor, named as "Peter Sherman of Indiana"
Either it was coincidental, or purposeful, (presumed fatherparents) Solomon named his two sons Peter (1788) ours and Ansel Sherman (1790). Wife Levi had a brothemed Ansell McCall. Continuing with the theory, we traced Ansel Sherman family record that shows he had a son named "Peter" and our Peter (1788) had a son named Ancel - my gggfather. 😳🤯 It's either very coincidental which is possible or we can assume Peter (1788) and Ansel (1790) were brothers and (a stretch) that Solomon and Levy were their parents.
Sorry, so confusing. Any ideas on alternate sources? Seneca NY had records which I have, but it doesn't show relationship - but they did "business" together.
(Early census reflects them all as Shearman). Thanks in advance !
