Got denied PTO so quit no notice

My partner and I had been living in an RV on the side of the road in an attempt to realise our self employment dreams. Unfortunately some snags meant the situation was prolonged and was less than ideal. We were harassed regularly and it was quite stressful.

Suddenly, we became aware there was an opportunity to purchase a property that ticked the boxes for not only our business, but we could also reside there. The property was so large in fact, we would have additional space that we could rent and are then also be landlords in addition to our primary business. Dreams we had, but thought would never happen without winning the lottery. There of course was a catch - the property is in another country...

My employment (in addition to my self employed gig) was involved with schools so had a policy that PTO can only be taken during school holidays. They did make an exception for me in order to attend an annual event related to my self employment - a stipulation I required before taking the job.

I didn't tell them about the property; I said an important family matter (me/my family are international) had arisen and that I would be gone a few days into the start of the term and asked if this time could please be PTO. Request denied. I acknowledged the message as "understood" and said nothing further.

I spent the rest of that day - my last day (I was the only one in the office anyway), on the phone with my partner and subsequently writing my resignation letter - effective immediately.

Before being denied PTO I had planned on honouring the "required" 6 week notice period to show someone what I had been doing, where I was, and what still needed doing - 100% of the role and it's processes were developed by me BTW; the owner would asked ME questions about HIS business. But after finding out my trip to see this property - which we were already sold on - would be unpaid we agreed that we would just leave as soon as possible.

So I wrote, signed and printed my letter, deleted slack, and their FB page admin rights, changed all private accounts to generic info and made it accessible for them, folded up my uniform clothes and id badge, locked up the office, put the keys thru the door, and never looked back. It took 4 weeks from first hearing about the property to leaving the country. No one ever reached out. It's been 9 months. Best decision ever.
