Water Hardness Scale

Can I get some insight into how to adjust a laundry regime for different levels of hardness? I did a few searches and while there’s a ton of discussion about dealing with hard water, I couldn’t find specifics for different degrees of hardness. How do recommendations change for those with water between 100-150 ppm, 150-200 ppm… Our city’s water is right on the cusp of moderate hard to hard (around 160 ppm), but when I go to the family cabin it’s >250 ppm, whereas my parents’ house has a softener.

My personal questions are how much does high quality HE detergent need to be adjusted? (I’ve seen everything from 25% more detergent to double.) Can powdered detergents be used? What volume of washing soda/borax/citric acid rinses are needed? At what stage is powdered detergent a write off?

I feel like I’m going through products so quickly, and my clothing is wearing out and fading, but also I have to pretreat everything to get it clean.

Any and all insight would be really appreciated!
