Advice to CAT Aspirants: From an IIM Alumnus

As someone who has walked the CAT journey and later thrived at an top IIM, let me share a few words of advice.

  1. Stick to a schedule you can sustain. Consistency matters more than intensity. Even 2–3 focused hours daily, if maintained with discipline, will bring you far closer to your goal than erratic bursts of effort.

  2. Don’t skip the “easy” parts. Often, we rush to master the toughest quant problems or advanced reasoning puzzles, forgetting that the CAT rewards accuracy and smart selection. Easy and moderate questions make up a large portion of the paper—and solving them efficiently gives you the best ROI.

  3. Build VARC every single day. Reading is not optional. Get into the habit of reading newspapers, long-form articles, and diverse topics—economics, philosophy, science, politics, and art. This will train you to absorb complex ideas quickly, improve your vocabulary in context, and sharpen comprehension.

  4. Mock tests are your mirror. Start early with sectional and full mocks, not for scores, but for identifying patterns—your strengths, your blind spots, and the silly mistakes you keep repeating. Then tailor your schedule to plug those gaps.

  5. Balance preparation with breaks. Mental stamina is as critical as intellectual preparation. Sleep well, eat right, and take short breaks to recharge—you’ll need peak energy for the two hours of the actual exam.

Remember: CAT isn’t just about intelligence, it’s about strategy, consistency, and calmness under pressure. Treat your preparation like a marathon, not a sprint.
