Do you genuinely support or not support the level of migration we currently see into the UK?
This is not rage bait, please do not use (too many) emotions here, but let's talk pragmatically about our country and society.
> Hans-Jürgen Papier, who was Germany’s top judge at the start of the Angela Merkel era, says the ECHR allows a ‘de facto right to migration through the back door’
> Papier said the current rules had opened the floodgates to “uncontrolled and unconditional immigration” and needed to be radically revised before the public lost faith in conventional politics.
If we put the flag situation to one side for now, and if we even put the current foibles of the Home Office to one side for now too, the current system we have allows for a lot of migration into the UK.
Some of it is good: doctors, nurses, Spice Lounge (my local favourite curry house), and a multitude of other kind and/or skilled workers.
Some of it is not so good: cultural mismatches, grooming gangs, minority ghettos and enclaves, anti-UK sentiment.
There are other things too which are concerning: among them, the inherent inability of homeless people seeking refuge being economically bankrupt (no homes, no assets, no possessions, and sometimes, no skills to rectify this) and the reliance on the welfare state of these individuals.
We're likely all familiar with having conversations with people who get angry and froth at the mouth rather than discuss things rationally. Objectively, people require support to survive, and if asylum claims take time, someone has to provide food, water, shelter, healthcare during that time.
Now stepping back from the burden of immigration, if we look at the effect of it, there are areas of Britain now that don't feel very "British". We've always had a proud multi-national history, some of us have served with people from the Commonwealth, and in some places in the world it feels more British than it does here. The more than we import cultures from other places, the more we'll dilute our own culture.
But what does that mean? Do we care about our high streets? Cafes? Cake shops? Butchers? Grocers? Do we cling onto an old ideal that we now only find in the Cotswolds and hidden parts of Cumbria?
There are a multitude of effects of migration and it'd be impossible to map them all out, but some people are genuinely still in favour of open borders and equalising "The West" and "The Rest".
So the question is:
Do you genuinely support or not support the level of migration we currently see into the UK?
