How do I deal with my Asian parents being upset about my tattoo?

Question/Advice

Hi all, I’m 28F and living with my parents in an Asian household. Recently, I decided to start a full back tattoo. I already have a few smaller tattoos, but I knew this one would be harder to hide. Out of respect, I told my mom before doing it (I could have just gone ahead like my previous ones).

At first, she wasn’t happy and said there’s no need for another tattoo. After a long conversation, she finally said, “It’s up to you.” So I went ahead and got the outline done. Now she’s telling me that my dad doesn’t agree, and I feel like I’m back to square one.

For context, I still live at home. In my country, you can only get your own place once you’re married — my fiancé and I have applied but our home won’t be ready until 2029. So yes, I’ll be stuck with them for a few more years.

I didn’t ask for permission because I’m 28 — I only told them out of respect. But now I’m dealing with disappointment, guilt, and their constant reminders that they don’t approve.

Has anyone else been through something similar? How do you balance respecting your parents in an Asian household while also standing by your own choices as an adult? Any advice on how to navigate the next few years until I can finally move out would be really appreciated.
