Please tell me it gets better...

Husband and I are in an absolute slump. LO just turned 7 weeks old today and we are having such a hard time with him. He was screaming and crying for 4 and a half hours this morning because he was so overtired, and he kept jolting himself awake every time he went down. He refuses to sleep anywhere except his swing or his car seat while driving. We finally got him to sleep in his swing which is so not safe. Husband is supervising while I'm crying in the bedroom. Nighttime he's ok in his bassinet, but we're seriously panicking. We don't feel like ourselves. We can't sleep while the baby sleeps. I feel like we just lost our lives and our freedom. I'm worried that we made a mistake. We haven't slept, he's up 6 or more times from midnight to 6am. We feel drunk we're so tired. Please tell me this gets better.
