should i apply for DHP?

Discretionary Housing Payment (DHP, Council)

i’ve just come on universal credit as i’ve graduated and looking for work. my UC is £664 and my rent is £800 not including bills, which is another 200.

i’m able to scrape by as i paid off my rent in advance until 1st november.

however im very fearful for what the next few months will look like. i can save the next 2 months UC payments for 1 more months rent paid but after that, im fucked. obviously i’m hoping to get a job by then but if that doesn’t happen… im fucked.

my UC advisor said to apply for discretionary housing payment, but upon further examination i’m not sure if i’d qualify right now seeing as my rent is covered for another 2 months. initially i thought that if i applied and got this DHP it would massively ease the impending doom of the next few months. bare in mind i have nightmare landlords and no one else for support so if they kick me out, im homeless. but seeing how rigorous the application process is, im assuming they’d find out i have my rent covered. and i don’t know what kind of position that puts me in… ideally id apply and not declare that and then id be sorted but im scared they’d ask my landlord directly. so im stuck. it could be the difference between security or the streets, but i know this dystopia requires you to be basically dead before they deem it urgent enough…

if i wait until november im worried it’ll just immediately trigger such severe issues with landlord, especially if i then have to explain the reason i cant pay is because of UC. they’re demonic people, it wouldn’t go down well.

but if i apply now im worried it’ll be some kind of fraud if i don’t say about the paid rent in advance and they find out (i hope people don’t get all weird about this and can appreciate i’m trying to avoid homelessness here lol)

so should i apply now or just leave it?
