How necessary is a BSN to get hired nowadays?

I graduated with my ASN in 2004, worked for over a decade in the PICU then took a break to raise my kids. I want to get back to work, but how necessary is a BSN to get hired these days? Should I start it now or wait and see if the hospital will pay for it?
