What does he want?

F29 have had an on and off situation with M31 who lives in a different country. We had a very explosive fight the last time we met up and have had little to no contact since. When we first met I think he saw me as more but the more we met the more anxious I got and the less he wanted me. I couldn’t handle still seeing him so I made sure the last time was the last time. Since then he’s ft me by accident once and I finally let go and sent an apology text which he responded. This weekend he texted me about something random and I answered. He asked if I was well I said I was and asked the same of him and ended it there. I can’t help but feel a little happy he reached out but a part of me wishes it was for something more. Can’t understand why he would break it.
