In therapy and trying to break old patterns. Has anyone with anxious avoidant attachment built a secure long distance relationship?

Question

I started seeing someone three months ago and it clicked right away. We just made things official even though distance is going to be part of the picture. I’m moving 5.5 hours away from him, but we’ll still be in the same time zone.

He’s the kindest man I’ve ever been with. He makes me laugh, makes me feel safe, and I can feel myself starting to really fall for him. He told me he’s never felt this way about anyone before. I’ve met his friends and his mom.

I have an anxious avoidant attachment style and I am in therapy working hard on it. My first relationship lasted 12 years starting when I was a teenager, and this is only my second real one at 27. I care about him so much but I get scared I’ll ruin it. When emotions feel too big I shut down instead of talking, and I know that hurts connection.

Has anyone with anxious avoidant tendencies been able to grow toward a secure relationship in a long distance situation…How did you make it work?
