My (F21) bf (M24) is in huge debt and refuses to sell his car

My bf and I have been together for over 2 years. Right before we started dating, his finances took a turn for the worse, partly from irresponsible spending (back when he still had money), using most or all of his savings for a car down payment, and then going through job changes that cut his salary drastically. On top of that came medical bills and car payments. Now he’s sitting on about 30k in credit card debt plus another 50k left on the car loan.

I try to support him the best I can and I pay for most things when we go out together. The issue is that I’ve been pushing him to sell his car because there’s just no way he can afford to keep it with this much debt and no savings. I’ve told him that I get how much he loves the car, but right now his financial situation is putting both our present and future at risk. The stress from it is also literally affecting his own mental and physical health. He says he understands, but keeps insisting that he just needs “more time” and that he could refinance in a bit less than 6 months from now (maybe), and that selling the car would be his absolute last resort. I disagree, because even if he somehow manages to eventually pay everything off, he will have absolutely no savings on the side, which means no foundation for building a future together (house, family, etc).

I’ve been patient and supportive through our whole relationship because I truly love this man, but I’m starting to feel like I’m just watching him avoid taking the hard but necessary steps/sacrifices to actually turn his situation around. Please let me know if any of you went trough something similar and if sticking through it is worth it? Is there anything I can do or say to convince him? I really don't wanna break up with him but I know that I can't wait for him forever to change things and finally become stable.
