Use Whole-Term Life Insurance Policy to Pay Off Student Loan?
I got a whole-term life insurance policy for $100,000 when I graduated college because my dad cosigned on the loan and I wanted to make sure if something happened to me that he would be be able to pay it off and not be on the hook for it. Fast forward 19 years and I am almost fully paid in. I still have $25,000 left on my student loan due to some hard years where I had to forbear, but I am on track to pay it off in the next 4 years, but paying a lot per month to do so.
I recently found out (because I am still a novice on how these things work) that I can either borrow against the whole-term policy or cash it out entirely. This means I can pay off the student loan, which was the whole point of the policy to begin with, but everything I've read says not to touch it. I also have a $750,000 20-year term policy and a $50,000 term policy through work, not to mention smaller policies in different organizations I'm a part of. I feel like an idiot, but to me it seems like it'd make things a lot easier for me to just borrow against or cash out the loan and get this damned student loan out of the way.
