STILL a new player - (In your opinion) What are the most useful skills to have in early game? And why?

I'm trying to work on carpentry and mechanics so I can fortify and/or repair a vehicle to make a journey when the area becomes too infested.

Is there something BETTER I can/should be doing early on?
