Applying flea medication to a long haired cat

I have a long haired cat who’s also a big bruiser. i have enough trouble getting him to sit still, but then I can’t seem to find a patch of bare scalp. No matter how much I comb around the back of his neck, down to the shoulder blades, all I see is hair, not scalp. Any suggestions?
