AITA for getting fed up with my boyfriend’s mom and walking out?

Advice Needed

I (F, 21) have been with my boyfriend (M, 24) for almost 4 years. We really love each other, but I often stay at his parents’ house and I’ve grown super frustrated with his mom. She micromanages everything. Her sons are already adults, but she still coddles them and treats them like they can’t take care of themselves.

I try to understand because she’s been a housewife all her life and probably feels her role is to take care of them. But it irritates me because it feels like they’ll always depend on her.

There was one time when my boyfriend and I fought, and his mom overheard. My boyfriend raised his voice at me (something we agreed we’d never do), and I cried. His mom barged in, started crying herself, and asked why we were “doing this to her” — even though it had nothing to do with her. Later, when we were trying to calmly talk it out, she stayed in the room, eavesdropping. When I explained to my boyfriend how hurt I was, she suddenly yelled at me saying, “You yelled at him first!” without even knowing the full story. I was shocked and pissed that she instantly blamed me.

On top of that, when my boyfriend was still in college, his mom often pressured me about his studies. I ended up doing his assignments and even his thesis just to stop being pressured. In the process, I neglected my own academics and failed some of my classes. She never once asked how I was doing.

The last straw happened last week. My boyfriend leaves early for work, so I woke up early to help him get ready. Despite me reminding him constantly to eat and get moving, he just stayed on his phone. He ended up late, left in a bad mood, and somehow this became my fault. His mom raised her voice at me, saying I should’ve nagged him more. I snapped — I raised my voice slightly but still polite — then I packed my stuff and left because I couldn’t take it anymore.

Now I’m stressed and feeling guilty, wondering if I overreacted. I love my boyfriend so much and I don’t want to cause a rift, but I feel like I’m being treated as a second mom to him and the scapegoat whenever things go wrong.

So… AITA for being fed up with my boyfriend’s mom and walking out?
