These are my three little bunners: Boof Boof (7), Halo (6) and Rose Ivy (6). Rose Ivy is the little one. She has pretty severe arthritis and her entire right rear hip joint is worn away, so there is no joint holding her leg into place. The three are all indoor free roam 24/7 but they have a hutch inside. Their litter boxes are inside the hutch. Because of Rose Ivy's hip, we've recently replaced their old standard sized litter boxes with low profile litter boxes so she doesn't have to jump to get into them. Especially since their hay is in the hutch over their boxes.

They seem to be using the litter boxes without issue (they have to be cleaned more often than the old ones so they're definitely using the new ones.) But the problem is, since the switch, the three have been scattering all over their two favorite rooms... which also happen to be the humans' two favorite rooms. RIV tends to prefer rugs over the hardwood floors because they have traction, so I've recently added more rugs so she can explore more of the house. And in the office and front room, if there's a rug, they're going to the bathroom on it (not necessarily just the new rugs, all of them). We didn't MOVE anything. We just added a couple of washable throw rugs and changed the litter boxes.

I'm not sure what to do. I'm willing to shrug it off and accept that this might just be the way things are now and resign myself to sweeping several times a day, but the buns don't love the broom in their space, and I'd rather not have a speckled floor most of the time if there are other options. I'd rather have a cleaner safer space for everyone.

Any suggestions?

TL;DR: changed litter box style. now bunnies are peppering the house with turds. it's like a ticker tape parade up in here

scattering! help!
