Need some advice about joining the local union.

Hey just a general question and need some advice. Im looking into joining my local IBEW. I have the most basic knowledge of electrical work and thats it. Im curious as to if I should do trade school for electrician before attempting to join the union or would that be a waste of time and I should just join the union and get my on the job training with them instead?
