How can I make up actual conversations with a guy that I like?

There is this guy that I like, lets call him John, John talks to me everyday single day and we have been going on talking for about a full month. We met up once for a weekend and it went great. because of distance we aren't able to see each weekend. With him getting his own place now, We can do meet ups at least every other weekend which is fine with me but when he texts me it's always small talk like "wyd" hru"" how is your day", "what you are you going to cook", but i really want to get to know him. What are some topics or things to say to him to spark up a meaningful conversation.
