First Time to Japan
My husband and I (mid-30s) are heading to Japan this December for our first visit—four weeks split between Tokyo and Osaka, flying out of Vancouver. We’re a gay couple who loves great food, local culture, and wandering off the beaten path. We’re not into major tourist attractions unless they’re food- or LGBTQ+ related, and we’d love suggestions from people who’ve been.
In Tokyo, we’re considering staying near Shinjuku Ni-chōme for the LGBTQ+ scene, but we’re also curious about quieter areas like Shimokitazawa or Koenji with more of a neighborhood feel. Same idea for Osaka—somewhere local, walkable, and close to food and nightlife, but not too loud.
We’re planning to hit up spots like Tsukiji and Kuromon markets but would love to hear about hidden gems or local food alleys. Also debating hotels vs. Airbnbs—especially curious what other queer travelers have found to be more comfortable and immersive.
We’re all about unique, local experiences—live music, late-night eats, vintage shops, or anything that gives us a deeper feel for the city. Travel hacks and transit tips are also appreciated.
Also, any travel hacks to help the trip run more smoothly.
Thanks so much in advance!
