Sangromancy dice usage clarification

In cases where a spell states “you must expend one Hit Point Die” can you choose to use more?

I’m thinking of cases like Crimson Lash where it says “it’s damage die is the same as the Hit Point Die expended”

Could you voluntarily choose to use more die to do more damage?
