Are Red Lights Now Optional in Norwalk or Did I Miss a New Law Being Passed
The title is not actually completely sarcastic, but a real question. Moved back to Norwalk from another state about a year ago after living here as a teen in the 80's. I have seen people completely ignoring the red arrows at stop lights. To me, a solid red arrow is the same as a red light, at least that's how it used to be in CT when I got my license as a 16 year old. But nearly every day I am seeing drivers in Norwalk completely ignoring them, especially when making a right turn, but it happens with left turns as well.
The worst place that I noticed for this is the entrance ramp to the Rt 7 Connector from Van Buren Avenue (Rte 1) by the Jefferson School going south. I go that way about twice per day, and virtually every day someone is either ignoring the arrow and making the left turn onto the Connector, or, worse, goes straight on Rte 1 for about 20 feet, makes a U-turn and enters the Connector from the Northbound side ( I get that this is a different problem). But I have seen this happen in other locations as well. So my question is: did the law change while I was away and is it OK now to make a right turn on a red arrow? I already had to be educated about pulling over for emergency vehicles even if they are approaching from the opposite side of the road (this was not the case earlier), so maybe this is something else I wasn't aware of?
