My boyfriend (33M) is ignoring me (30F) after I visited his family in his home country

My boyfriend (33M) and I (30F) have been dating for ~1.5 years. He has been living in the USA for the last 2 years and I am American. I recently went with him to visit his home country to see his friends and family. The trip ended up being harder than I expected with the language barrier and cultural differences but I tried to make the best of it. What sucked is even the friends of his who did speak English chose not to much. I have been learning the language but it definitely wasn’t at the point where I could understand large group conversations at the many long dinners I had to sit in the corner during. During the trip when I tried to bring up the anxiety/loneliness this caused me he would acknowledge it and say “this is one of the hardest things to do” but he would also say “I have been looking forward to this for 8 months, don’t ruin in”.

After we got back I didn’t see him for the 3 days until I left for a 2.5 week trip I had planned. Since leaving he hasn’t been talking to me much at all and we usually have a decent texting pacing. Not all day long by any means but I travel a lot for work and we have gotten in the habit of short calls every couple of days and updates throughout the day. Now it’s been almost silent except when I initiate and wait forever. His messages are short, he ignores my flirting, and his tone is different.

I tried to gently bring this up with him the other day on a short call and he seemed immediately frustrated and said “I’m not used to talking everyday in relationships”. He never said that in the 1.5 years previously and we have had nearly daily communication.

I’m confused where all this has come from and it’s been making me anxious. The visit was hard for me and really raised my anxiety levels because I felt so lonely. Now to come back and feel alone in this relationship has been hard and interfering with me fully enjoying this trip.

I’m trying to be empathetic to his situation. Maybe he is sad and missing his home country since returning. But not knowing the cause makes me feel stressed. So I guess my question is how would you handle this? Would you try to address it again on a call despite negative feedback last time? Somehow try to ignore it (I’m so bad at that) and wait til you get back (1.5 more weeks)?
