Ativan while flying
TL;DR: Did taking Ativan, specifically a 1mg dose help you get through flying? What were some side effects if any, and how did it make you feel overall?
Hoping to hear some advice from others who have used Ativan specifically to help them get on a plane.
Some background; around 2022 I developed an aversion to even the thought of getting on a plane. Growing up I never flew, but between 2017 and 2022 I got on about 8 flights. Hated it, but I survived.
Mental health took a hit and now I suffer horrid anxiety and OCD around flying. Started seeing a psych (and a therapist) and both have been a huge help. I've been on 50mg of Zoloft for about a year and love it.
Despite all my improvements I'm still terrified of flying. Psych gave me Ativan. I have tried one .5mg pill on two separate occasions just to see how it would effect me. And yeah it made me less anxious but I was still kind of anxious, ya know? Psych okayed me to take 2 pills, so 1mg, for flying.
My question: if you've taken 1mg Ativan how did it make you feel while flying? Did it work, or were you still anxious? My big fear with flying is not just heights, but the lack of control and horror at the thought of what I could do, like having a panic attack or a meltdown and doing something stupid like trying to open the door. I hate being trapped, especially around so many people with no "escape". Even just typing it out is getting me clammy!
So please share with me your experiences flying on Ativan. My psych told me to take the 2 pills at once, not one and then the second a hour or so later so I'm curious if anyone can describe how it feels being on one pill vs two.
And just to add; I know Ativan is powerful and can be misused. But the two times I tried it, while I appreciate the dulling of my anxiety I didn't really like the feeling, ya know? I like to be mentally sharp and the pill made me feel sluggish and out of it. So my psych is confident I won't abuse it. I also know not to drink alcohol on this. Usually I love a glass of wine while at 30k feet but for now I'm happy with ginger ale.
