CPU Temperature Issues (I only play World of Warcraft)

Hello,

I recently traded my console set up for an older MSI GF65 Thin 10sdr. It has an Intel i7 and a GTX 1660Ti with 8GB DDR4. The only game I ever really see myself playing with-it would-be WOW, which I would expect it to handle with zero issues. I've noticed CPU temperatures to be around 45-65 at idle or while browsing but when I start playing WOW (on 3/10 graphics mind you) I get sustained CPU temps of anywhere from 70-100 with some lagging in high pop areas. CPU usage while playing is only sitting around 10-15% so I know there is something going on. I have validated these temperatures with both the Dragon Center App (which I have noticed gets a lot of hate) and HWMonitor.

The previous owner said he opened it up and dusted the fans which he said the dust was so thick it was, "like a filter." So, I am guessing there is a lot of dust in there he missed along with never replacing the factory thermal paste. I plan on doing the following to try and fix this matter:

  • Remove heat sync and disassemble fans for a more in-depth dust cleaning.
  • Replace thermal paste and thermal pads.
    • Also going to replace the one stick of 8 GB Ram with two sticks of 8 GB while I'm in there.
  • Dig out a cooling pad I had for an old laptop years ago and begin using that.

Are there any other ideas anyone has to help keep a cooler system while playing WOW? I feel like my CPU/GPU/Ram should be able to smoothly run it much higher than 3/10 graphics, but I have been cautious because of the temperatures. Any specific settings I should have in the Dragon Center App such as:

  • Gaming mode on vs. off
  • Fan speeds (Auto, advanced, cool master)
  • Performance (High, med, low)

I am new to this whole, "PC" or in my case "laptop" gaming scene so any advice would be helpful. Thank you!
