Hardware cloth for rodents - 1/4" 23-gauge or 1/2" 19-gauge

Which of these to get to stop squirrels/rats/mice from getting into the attic? From my research I have been seeing that 23-gauge may not be strong enough, but 1/2" could still be big enough to allow rodents in. It seems like neither will work which is why I am confused. What do people use?

I am in the USA and have been unable to find 1/4" with a lower gauge
