Do I need a GitHub if I already have work experience?

I’ve been working as a Python dev for a few years and I’m looking to switch jobs. Do recruiters actually care about GitHub if you already have commercial experience, or is that mostly for people without work history? I’d rather start applying now than spend months building side projects just to fill my profile.
