How can I make peace with the way my partner sees the world without losing him or my mind?
I’m 22F and I’ve been with my partner (27M) for a while now. I sincerely love him, and I do see myself staying with him for a long time, if not forever. However, our views of seeing the world are VERY different.
I’m used to following orders and the typical human path to survive in this world: study, get a job, work hard, repeat. So far, it’s never been a problem for me. I like the structure it gives me on a daily basis and it helps me work towards goals that CAN be achieved if I try to put in the work like everyone else.
My partner however, sees the world from a “top-down” perspective. In the sense that his main focus is who’s controlling the government, who is then controlling the system we live in, and consequently, who is also controlling us to follow the roles that have been forced upon us by society and the government figures in control. He also strongly believes in many conspiracy theories that I don’t fully understand and blames the state of our world on those specific conspiracy theories. He has been like that for years, but it’s been getting worse and worse lately. He claims that he’s reading into this side of the internet/ world to find the truth about what’s going on. I can understand wanting to understand the system we live in and to want to gain some control over our own lives. But the way he does it (specially by taking words of some other conspiracy theorist for cash) is starting to affect me and my mental health… a lot more than I’d like to admit.
I go to college, I’ve studied sciences and psychology. I’ve done research by following the scientific method and by having strong objective data analyzed through statistics and maths. I KNOW how to find reliable sources online and I also know how to compile information appropriately. Critical thinking is a HUGE part of what I do in life. Unfortunately, my partner has done none of this and refuses to acknowledge that conspiracies do NOT have the same level of credibility as objective data collected through extensive and objective research.
I feel like he’s forcing me to put all the stuff I’ve learned “behind”, so that I can agree with his point of view. I have a lot of doubts about what he says, I’ll be honest. I’m being pulled away from my comfortable place of being, where I simply follow the path that’s ahead of me without questioning it all. Because of the way he is, I’ve started to doubt everything he says. I don’t know what true and what’s not. It has also forced me to use even more critical thinking on a daily basis. It’s gotten to the point where I don’t make any conclusions because I don’t know what’s real and what’s a lie anymore and I don’t want to claim things that aren’t true.
It really hurts to say it, but I’m scared of losing myself because of the way he is. I’ve questioned before if it’s psychosis. I don’t think so, but it really does look similar from time to time.
How can I possibly accept everything that’s going on without losing him or my mind?
