Is novel writing meant to feel so emotionally exhausting?

Sorry for the dramatic title but I’m going through it today.

Most of my writing experience has been short form formats. I’ve done a bunch of short stories and little pieces of writing throughout my life.

I decided to finally make the plunge and draft a full sized novel.

I’m about 60,000 words into my manuscript and I have a good few chapters left to go. But I’m emotionally drained. I feel like I’ve connected with my characters so deeply their pain actually is affecting me.

I’ll be hanging out with my friends or at work and feel a weird melancholy because I’ll be thinking about a painful chapter I just wrote or am planning to write.

I don’t know if this is a common feeling amongst all of you. Does the conflict you write about seep into your life and feel like a bit of an emotional roller coaster or am I just too sensitive?
