Why are there so many political flags in Guwahati?

Hey, I recently visited Guwahati, beautiful place and amazing people, but I'm curious why are there literally so many political flags everywhere? Guwahati would look much better without the flags. I started seeing them as soon as I left the airport. I'm from Delhi and I don't really notice many here.
