How does returns with with partial gift card payment?

I have a gift card for $20 and am planning to shop the f and f sale. But I’m curious how returns work? For example if my total is $100 and I use the gift card and then pay the rest with credit.

If I return something costing only $25 would the money go back onto my gift card or credit?
