Gen 3 (A1040) 40GB - Copy songs off hard drive

Found my Gen 3 40 GB in a box of old stuff. After getting the correct firewire charger off ebay, I found it still works but the battery doesn't last long (3-5 songs). I'll be working on that but one concern is that I can really feel the HD clicking inside. Also, when playing a playlist, it might hesitate on a song and then eventually skip it to the next track. If it go back, it will play the song. During that time, I can really feel the HD clicking around. Is there is a way to get the songs off? I'd like to install a new solid state drive of some sort (Flash or SD) and then put these songs back on as I have about 30 GB of songs on here.
