Miz October role
The kid has amazing stuff. His ceiling is non existent and imo he has the potential to be a perennial Cy Young candidate for the foreseeable future. That being said, ever since his IL stint he has had a lot of trouble with command, which has led to him getting behind in counts then lowering his velocity to try and throw strikes. Not sure if this is a subconscious thing on his part or if he was instructed to do so by coaching staff, but I am not a fan of it. He still has still consistently been sitting at 100 until he falls behind in counts and will often go down to 96-97. Personally I think that leaves the team with 2 options. A: Send him down to the minors and hope he is able to find his command before the postseason. Or B: Move him to a long relief type role for the rest of the season.
Obviously with a division race and first round bye in the balance you don’t want to lose him right now, but I feel like continuing to use him as a starter right now is just doing more harm than good. I feel like that start against the Reds and the start against the Cubs in Wrigley highlighted this as he couldn’t locate which let hitter sit on heaters and foul off pitches until they got it.
They need to find a way to get him back on track and attacking hitters rather than picking at the corners.
Thoughts?
