RuneScape nostalgia
This is my first post, and I’m happy that it’s about RuneScape**. This will be translated, so I hope it’s clear enough.**
I (31M) had the chance to play RuneScape back in what now feels like the distant year of 2007. I used to play carefree afternoons and nights; on weekends I’d even start in the morning. You can’t imagine how fun it was — I honestly remember it with so much nostalgia.
When I started university as an Industrial Engineering student —Linear Algebra, Advanced Statistics, Organic Chemistry— I slowly drifted away from RuneScape because I simply had no time to play.
Still, around 2012 I took the leap to become a member and managed to complete several quests and max out multiple skills at 99. I was very dedicated back then, with several skillcapes, most of them earned after spending countless hours as a f2p player.
Later on, around 2016–2017, the battle royale era began. First PUBG, then Fortnite, and eventually Warzone. Out of all of them, Warzone was by far the one I played the most — I spent countless hours on it. But the bugs, glitches, cheaters, and the lack of real innovation eventually made it unplayable, and I grew tired of it.
During those years I would log into my RuneScape account once every few months, just out of habit, and each time I noticed the game getting more and more complex… until one day I realized I had gone six years without logging in. UNBELIEVABLE HOW FAST TIME GOES BY!!
Anyway, a few months ago, as the owner of a PS5 Pro with a huge game library, I sat down to see what I could play. With titles like Dragon Ball Z: Sparking! Zero, Expedition 33, the new Doom, and a ridiculous amount of “triple A” games, I literally couldn’t stick to any of them for more than five minutes. None of them had what I was looking for to keep me hooked.
Now, married and with more responsibilities, RuneScape crossed my mind and I decided to log back in. I spent hours and hours playing this past weekend; I felt just like that kid in Lumbridge killing cows for hides to sell at the Grand Exchange. It’s incredible how nostalgia alone can pull you back into RuneScape. I even checked my bank and saw an armor set that I remember dearly: a full rune (g). A good friend gave it to me back then, but one day he just disappeared without a word. His name was survivor827. Wherever you are, more than 15 years later, I still carry that memory with me.
Of course, not everything was great. I don’t know if it’s an age thing or just the game’s complexity, but I find it hard to understand many of RuneScape 3’s mechanics. There’s just so much new information that it feels overwhelming. YouTube guides help, but it’s not the same as having a friend explain things to you. OSRS has a certain magic I can’t really put into words — its simplicity just makes everything click faster.
Years ago, people used to say RuneScape was dying, but I can see there are still plenty of returning players like me, who sometimes just want to feel younger again and relieve the stress of daily life.
If you’d like to help out an old player, my in-game name is Yayo995.
Thanks for reading!
