How do you write or want to read mystery fics?

I ask this because I'm currently writing a fix it fic for a series out of pure spite and wanted to do a mystery aspect that the original series traded in for aura farming.

My method of mystery is to have the mystery thrust upon my protagonists without consent or care for their safety, I put them in a situation where they have no choice but to solve the mystery or die.

There's usually someone around them that thinks that they know the answers and is with holding it till they are in contact with someone that they trust. Usually the mystery has layers in secrecy and caste systems that is almost unrecognizable to the average viewer till the rug is pulled under like your are living in a simulation type of thing.

And it'll take awhile for the mystery to be revealed as bits and peaces are discovered and they discovered that the truth to the mystery that they were searching for is just another piece to the actual mystery which is way harder and now they are in even more danger than before. This is usually the time I start killing off characters as well and get really answers to the mystery that's been dangling over their heads which will not all be known for a long time still.
